The object of the study is to determine the age of the fresh water fishes of Kashmir by using ‘scales’. The scales give a clue to the age of the fish as shown by the annulations of annular bands/rings around centre or nucleus. Since radii and centre is found to be of little use in age determination, the use of scales in the determination of age of fishes is confined to marine fishes. However, It reports that recent studies as those of Huttom (1921), Laglar (1947), Hiyama (1952) , Nutraja (1963) have established the feasibility of age determination with the help of scales in fresh water fishes. The study on ‘scale readings’ relate to opercula, otoloths and vertebrae only with reconsideration of annuli and circuli.Different types, arrangement, modification, importance of scales in fish systematic are also studied. |
